Technology and Speeds
Understanding how your connection works — and choosing the right speed for your home. At CountryWideBB, we believe great internet starts with clarity. No jargon. No guesswork. Just a simple explanation of how the NBN works, what technology you might have at your address, and which speed tier will give you the best experience.
NBN Technologies Explained
Different technologies. Same goal: fast, reliable internet.
Here’s a simple breakdown of the technologies used across Australia
FTTP — Fibre to the Premises
Best performance. A full fibre connection direct to your home. Supports all speed tiers up to 2000/500. If you have FTTP, you can choose any plan we offer.
FTTC — Fibre to the Curb
Fast and stable. Fibre to the pit outside your home, short copper tail inside. Supports up to 100/40.
FTTN — Fibre to the Node
Performance varies by distance. Fibre to a neighbourhood cabinet, copper to your home. Speeds depend on how far you are from the node. We’ll show you the best options once you enter your address.
Fixed Wireless
Great for rural properties. A high‑capacity wireless link from a nearby tower. Speeds depend on signal quality and tower load. We offer 100/20, 250/20 and 400/40 where available.
Hybrid Fibre Coaxial
High performance. Fibre to the street, coaxial cable to your home. Supports speeds up to 2000/100. Great for streaming, gaming, and busy households.
| Technology | Max Speed Tier | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| FTTP | 2000/200 | Best performance |
| HFC | 2000/100 | High performance |
| FTTC | 100/40 | Short copper tail |
| FTTN | 100/40 (variable) | Distance‑dependent |
| Fixed Wireless | 100/20, 250/20 | Depends on signal, weather and tower |
Which Speed Tier Is Right for You?
Download Speed — What It Affects
Download is how fast data comes to you.
It impacts:
- Streaming (Netflix, YouTube, Stan)
- Browsing and social media
- App updates and downloads
- Online gaming content delivery
- Multiple people using the internet at once
Higher download = smoother streaming and faster loading.
Upload Speed — What It Affects
Upload is how fast data goes from you to the internet. It impacts:
- Video calls (Zoom, Teams, FaceTime)
- Sending large files
- Cloud backups (iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive)
- Security cameras uploading footage
- Online gaming responsiveness
- Remote work tools
Higher upload = clearer video calls and more stable real‑time activity.
Why Both Matter
Most households focus on download, but upload is just as important for:
- working from home
- kids doing schoolwork
- smart home devices
- gaming
- anyone who uses cloud storage
This is where CWBB’s premium network shines — stable performance in both directions, even during peak hours.
